Challenge 19: Negative Space

/, Inspiration/Challenge 19: Negative Space

Welcome to week 19 of the 2024 SlickPic 52-week Photo Challenge! Thanks for being on the journey, and being committed to improving your skills.

This week’s Challenge is: Negative Space

Negative space or white space refers to the empty space surrounding and between the subject/s or visual components of an image. It’s a term typically used in art and design, but is also a useful concept for photography, particularly for minimalist approaches to the craft. When skillfully done, you’ll be able to both draw the viewer’s attention to your subject and the vast emptiness that envelops it.

The key to using this technique is to have your main subject (positive space) and the space around it (negative space) dominate the frame. The other elements should be kept to a minimum so they don’t distract from the scene. As with many photography techniques, you can get creative with negative space for this challenge. You can fill the empty space with solid color, texture, and landscape elements, or keep it white.

SlickPic was created by a group of like-minded photographers and photography-enthusiasts who wanted a service that wouldn't force them to conform to a certain style or niche, but one that would allow them the freedom to use their photos to tell whatever stories they want. They wanted a service that was capable of storing, showcasing, sharing, and displaying photos in all the different ways people use photos: some are meant just for family, some are taken for friends, and some are made for the world to see.
