Challenge 23: Urban Decay

/, Inspiration/Challenge 23: Urban Decay

Welcome to week 23 of the 2024 SlickPic 52-week Photo Challenge! Thanks for being on the journey, and being committed to improving your skills.

This week’s Challenge is: Urban Decay

An unusual photography genre that stemmed from urban exploration (UrbEx), urban decay photography embodies the idea that there’s beauty in everything. There’s a story to tell even in abandoned places and old, deteriorating buildings. If you’re up for that challenge, this is right up your alley.

Since these locations are often not the first to come to mind for many photographers, some consider this an acquired taste. Apart from the challenge of finding interesting scenes and subjects amidst the ruins, there are also shooting issues and safety considerations to prepare for. Make sure you’re ready with flashlights (or head-mounted lights and lighting gear), tripod, and wide-angle lenses. The genre is already a challenge on its own, but if you want to take it up a notch, consider shooting at sundown or at night!

Whether you’re totally new to this genre or have already dipped your toes into it, we’re sure you’ll want some tips and tricks. We suggest checking out these helpful guides from Digital Photography School and Contrastly, as well as some urban exploration photography inspiration from Photofocus.

About the Author:

SlickPic was created by a group of like-minded photographers and photography-enthusiasts who wanted a service that wouldn't force them to conform to a certain style or niche, but one that would allow them the freedom to use their photos to tell whatever stories they want. They wanted a service that was capable of storing, showcasing, sharing, and displaying photos in all the different ways people use photos: some are meant just for family, some are taken for friends, and some are made for the world to see.
