Walk through in your mind what you want. Simulate and brainstorm as best you can ahead of time. Figure out where you want to take the picture from, the best focal length, exposure, f/stop, tripod setup, etc. head of time. Do dry runs before the event. My photograph with the most awards, of a space launch from Vandenberg, was done this way.
