One year in Central America aboard Happy Feets with Capt. Ron, Co-Capt. Karen & 1st Mate ZeldabelleMAY, 2013 - MAY, 2014Freeport, FL to Rio Dulce, Guatemala, to Bay Islands of Honduras, thru Belize, to Isla Mujeres, Mexico
HappyFeetsFREEPORT, FL TO RIO DULCE, GUATEMALA
We left Freeport, FL in May, 2013, and sailed down the west coast of Florida to the Dry Tortugas, then jumped off for a four-day nonstop passage past Cuba to Guatemala. This took about 6 weeks from home to the Rio Dulce, Guatemala.
We cleared into customs and immigration at Livingston then motored down the river, first through a 10 mile gorge with high walls, and then upriver about 20 miles till we anchored at Fronteras, also known as Rio Dulce, same name as the waterway.
We lived on the Rio Dulce, Guatemala, four months. We took a few inland trips but mostly explored the numerous rivers in our dinghy and got to know the sailboat community there. Our friend Casey’s home is at Cayo Quemado, about 20 miles downriver from the town of Fronteras. There are no roads to Casey’s place, the only way to reach him and the many others who live along the river is by boat. Nearly everyone has a launcha - a small open boat - often carved out of a tree trunk.
We then headed back through the gorge to Livingston to clear out. As soon as we left Casey’s dock, the light drizzle quickly turned into a heavy rain. We have an enclosed steering station so were able to continue the two-hour passage through the gorge, motoring at about 5 knots, a nice leisurely pace to enjoy the trip.
This time I took photos, but it just kept raining. I thought the pics were pretty much of a loss. But when I went to the computer, the digital system saved a few of them so here they are in all their wet glory.
Perhaps you can almost feel the cool humid air hanging in the mountains as we leave incredible Guatemala and head east to the Bay Islands of Honduras.
