I was determined to find a couple of trails, where I could hike to view and photograph falls. You know about the best laid plans: I was in deep backcountry. My first effort was to experience the views from Waucheesi Overlook, in Coker Creek. Street signs, at best, are non-existent. After getting directions from the Post Office, I headed back to find my turn-off. Along the way, I came across a local: I do not believe he was as old as his appearance: white beard, a mouth full of tongue, and no teeth. He had painted the 10 Commandments on his garage door - the property was very nicely kept. I was on a steep grade, and was trying to hold the car there by releasing/engaging the clutch. The car was enveloped in burning smoke. He told me to pop the hood but found nothing there. I told him it was probably the clutch. He gave directions contrary to the map. He said to turn left - the map indicated right on Bald River Rd. When I questioned him, he said, "Well, I don't know." I followed his directions and got myself into something from which only God could have saved me: A steep, winding, single lane, rock-strewn road that became covered in ice & snow. The car was overheating from running in 1st gear. It took at least 5 3-point turns to get myself turned back around and descend that mountain. And, yes, it was the wrong road. I tried to find an access road to a falls and, again, had to ask another Post Office for directions. The road given did not exist; at least, not with any signage. Back on the road, I planned to do a 3.5 mile hike to another falls, on the way home. By that time, I was running so late and had to be back and in church by 7pm. I'll try this trip again,next week, with a friend who can be co-pilot.
