Novel Route: Ridge out of W-Alcocer to Twin Towers 9,075' - Aug 19, 2018

Aug 21, 2018

Probably our most adventuresome route, circa 8 ½ miles. It is strenuous all the way!

The first challenge: breaking off the trail and conquering a steeply-sloping scramble up some ~500'

to crest the headland of a ridge with a view.

Breathless!  Upper San Miguel in far distance.

Quite a few flowers this time of year. Many examples of Estrella, and several types of Salvia,

as well as the many common, mostly yellow, flowers.

Examples of Venenillo – Pineneedle Milkweed with its dandelion-like seed pods.

Tacote - Blue Sage

Tacote  -  Blue SageGetting up above 8,500', the terrain changes to Oak forest with a heavy growth of grape-like vines and Montanoa shrubs on a steep slope with deep leaf-mulch underfoot. In this more rarified air, it again requires a determined push to get through, with the added challenge of vines wrapping around your boots to trip you. One of our members got enough practice with involuntary supination, to perfect a graceful ballerina-like descent onto the soft mulch!Arrival at the peak at 11:10 am, sweat-soaked despite the pleasantly cool air, and physically dog-tired, meant that everyone simply sank down to eat and gaze at the magnificent view. Not even enough energy for a group photo! This village  at the end of the trail boasts a friendly-service tienda and refrigerated beveragesto finish off our hike at 2 pm, before heading home to top off with more liquid refreshment and a welcome shower.Of all our 37 trails, this one is probably the most enervating because of the need to interact with natural growth while negotiating relatively steep slopes. At no point are you provided with a long view of a rocky, boring trail - - your ambient surroundings are theimmediate challenge. The verdure underfoot makes it the kindest trail in terms of impact on knee joints. It says a lot about the adventuresome attitude of this group of nine hikers, that, despite the physicality of the challenge, everyone rated this outing as one of their top favorites. These 9,000 Foottahs are my favorite people too! I love their take on a challenge!
