Klaksvik to Kalsoy- A Windy Venture

The wind in the Faroe Islands is well...strong to say the least. Before I came, all the photos I looked at and Blogs that I read, all talked about the dangers of the wind, fog and unpredictable weather. Well, they were right. The way the weather can change, is to say it bluntly, frightening...especially when you happen to be hiking on the side of a mountainside, with a cliff straight down to the water on the other side of the ridge. I took the car ferry from Klaksvik to Kalsoy in the middle of the winter. An island with only 20 inhabitants and no stores to grab a hot coffee. I brought the warmth of my rental car, a thermos filled with hot tea and snacks to keep me going as I ventured up one hill and down the other...with the wind sometimes at my front and other times helping me along from the back.

I had been on the Faroe Islands for a day at this point. A hurricane had just ripped through the islands, taking 1,200 roofs along with it. I was getting up early to catch the ferry to neighboring Kalsoy, a 20min. boat ride. Nervous...a bit.  The wild Atlantic. Whoa. By this point, I hadn't seen any of the Faroe Islands yet. It had been windy, cloudy, rainy and snowy in the 24hrs that I had arrived and I was anxiously anticipating seeing what this magical place had to offer. Well, this was my first view...in Klaksvik (5,000 residents), where I was being blown around the parking lot, with my camera in hand, waiting for the ferry.

As soon as I arrived, I took the one road heading toward the North, with the 2 other cars that had joined me on the ferry. I was chatting with one gentleman in the parking lot about his adventures, and he too, was excited to be in the Faroes, a long time dream of his. He was from Iran and was traveling alone. We shared stories and found ourselves meeting again toward the end of the day, as there is one road, so it is bound to happen! I also met one of the crew members, his name was Jacob. He was from Kalsoy, had little to say but was friendly enough. As soon as the ferry docked, I was alone and knew only that sheep were sometimes in the road on this island, there were no facilities and the return ferry was coming back for us (weather permitting, HA!) in a few hours. I had my hiking boots, camera, windproof jacket and lots of snacks. I was ready for adventure. Or so I thought. I knew little about this island in terms of exploration, with the exception that there was a lighthouse somewhere and a statue of a seal woman. I kept driving...I found a village at the very end of the island and with no signage of where to go I started walking. I saw some sheep up ahead, who seemed not in the least bit interested in me until...I entered the gate, closed it, and turned around to find this...

Later I learned that the gate that I went through, was the gate that the farmer goes through to feed his sheep. No wonder! I stood in shock and didn't know if it was going to attack me or snuggle me. I was frozen. There were 3 others that you can't see in the picture. I stood there for what felt like a century, but as I have learned, sheep are VERY camera shy. I began to take out my camera and it scurried away, only to return when I ignored it and I quickly turned around and got the very picture you see here with the sheep's expression..."State your business."
I can almost hear the wind in this picture. After my interaction with Sir Sheep at the bottom of the hill, I began walking up and around in this field. There were sheep everywhere, and since they live here and probably know the land pretty well, I decided I would follow in their footsteps, wondering all the while, "How do these sheep not blow of the side of this cliff!" Slowly turning my attention toward myself, as I realized, the higher up I got, the stronger the gusts were. I was doing everything I could to stay put, kneeling down every time a gust of wind came, with the fear that my jacket would catch an updraft and whisk me away into the North Atlantic sea never to be seen again. As you can see in the photo, some serious wind. The sheep, was my inspiration. Stood composed, strong and undisturbed. Almost tranquil.
