Picachos hiking: La Campana, N-ridge to Crater Ridge 24 June '18

How abruptly the weather has changed to bring us multiple weeks of nightly rains! How the vegetation has responded with shades of bright green! Even the flowers on the trails are starting to return!

To revel in the changes brought by the rains, we elected to start from the village of LaCampana and go up the steeply-sloping North ridge to False Peak (8,800'), down to Balancing Boulder and Picnic Rock with the great views, and finally up the steep climb to Crater Ridge below the Picachos peak at 9,200'.

Crater Ridge.   LtR  Geoff  George  Stella  Rocio  Robin

Rocio, hiking with us for her second time, had a ball!  I have asked her to recruit some more Hispano-hablantes to join the Gringos and extranjeros, who admire the beautiful vistas provided by her native pais!

The steep up-route provided dry footing after a rainy night. We took a circular route on our return because we wanted to see the Colorado Canyon with cascades of water running down it. This meant the lower section and near the village would present some muddy routes to negotiate. In the event it proved quite passable.

Coming down after a tricky fence crossing. We could soon hear the water cascading down the Colorado Canyon, far below us.

There used to be a very pretty waterfall shooting out into a pool, next to Right-turn-Rock.

Instead, this familiar boulder landmark now had water running down both sides of it, as the left side waterfall had eroded into a channel and presented a tumbling cascade. The next picture taken from a vantage point lower downstream, displays this better.

Right-Turn Big Rock Waterfall

I wonder how many seasons more it will take for the humungous Right-turn-Rock to become dislodged into the pool below? That should provide a spectacular splash, if happenstance provided witnesses at that moment!

Approaching 9 miles in length, this circular hike left us with sore feet and tired bodies -
ready for a fast night's sleep to follow.
