Mexico City is a great place. It is very similar to a southern European city.  It has so much art, archaeological ruins and interesting architecture.  It is a hectic city of 24 million people and traffic is bad but it is safe and the people are very kind and don’t harass you.

Basillica deNuestra Senora de Guadeloupe – this is the holiest place for Catholics in America. The church is built near a site where a Native American Juan Diego is claimed to have seen a vision of Our Lady Guadeloupe in 1531.   The image of Mary is inside which can be viewed on a travelator . Apparently it’s not even a picture; even NASA couldn’t confirm it was a painting.

OAXACA

This is a small town in the south of Mexico with soaring temperatures.  It is very pretty with brightly coloured buildings set against the mountainous back drop, which seem a lot closer than they are.

The town itself has a lot of museums and galleries as well as many archaeological sites nearby and guided tours to nearby towns.

Zacatecas

This is the hometown of my host Ana Patty, an 8 hour bus ride away.  It's 8100ft above sea level, making it the second highest city of Mexico,  It's prettier than Oaxaca with it's unique style and  (rose) color of the buildings but also less touristy. I brought home a lot of cheese and silver from there.

El Mina Eden – The tour takes you 200ft below.

Cathedral -  This was started in 1729 and finished in 1904.  The exterior is beautiful. Built of cantera (local pink stone) and intricately carved with the 8 statues of the apostles and Christ. Inside it is surprisingly plain due to a lot of stuff being stolen during the fight for independence and the revolution

Mexico is one of the best places I have visited. It has something for everyone including great weather, food and people and in terms of history, art and culture can rival anything in Europe.
