National Creek Falls
National Creek Falls is yet another among the long list of highly photogenic waterfalls in Oregon. The falls occur where the spring-fed creek diverges around a basalt outcropping and plunges about 40 feet over a jagged ledge in two scenic channels. The grotto below the falls is exceptionally scenic and thriving in greenery, with a small meadow of mosses growing on a flat area just downstream of the falls where Falls Creek merges with National Creek. The falls flow very consistently and are good to visit any time of the year.

People have lived along the Rogue River and its tributaries for at least 8,500 years. European explorers made first contact with Native Americans toward the end of the 18th century and began beaver trapping and other activities in the region. Clashes, sometimes deadly, occurred between the natives and the trappers and later between the natives and European-American miners and settlers. These struggles culminated with the Rogue River Wars of 1855–56 and removal of most of the natives to reservations outside the basin.
Rabbit Ears Rock Formation
Rabbit Ears are volcanic plugs from the "Old Cascades" located within the Menagerie Wilderness. There are about two dozen significant spires (volcanic plugs) located within the wilderness. Rabbit Ears are twin pillars with each free standing spire being about 300 feet tall.

The Rogue RIver
The Rogue River in southwestern Oregon flows about 215 miles in a generally westward direction from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean. Known for its salmon runs, whitewater rafting, and rugged scenery, it was one of the original eight rivers named in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Beginning near Crater Lake, which occupies the caldera left by the explosive volcanic eruption of Mount Mazama, the river flows through the geologically young High Cascades and the older Western Cascades, another volcanic province. Further west, the river passes through multiple exotic terranes of the more ancient Klamath Mountains. In the Kalmiopsis Wilderness section of the Rogue basin are some of the world's best examples of rocks that form the Earth's mantle.

"The Cave", part of a lava tube created eons ago
A lava tube is a natural conduit formed by flowing lava which moves beneath the hardened surface of a lava flow. Tubes can be actively draining lava from a volcano during an eruption, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased and the rock has cooled and left a long, cave-like channel.

Mill Creek Falls

Mill Creek Falls
Mill Creek Falls, a "plunge" tye waterfall, is the centerpiece behind the Mill Creek Falls Scenic Area developed by Boise Cascade just outside of the small town of Prospect. The falls hurtle 173 feet into the Rogue River Gorge in an explosive manor, luring eagerly approaching visitors like a siren in the distance. Though Mill Creek does exhibit somewhat of a seasonal fluctuation of flow, the falls don't change their appearance much at all, making this a good destination any time of the year.
Once mighty and high, now fallen.
Barr Creek Falls
Barr Creek Falls is a multi-stepped waterfall in the Rogue River Canyon near Prospect, Oregon. Barr Creek drops over a 60 foot fall which is mostly obscured by trees, then cascades 30 feet and finally plunges 150 feet to the canyon floor. Barr Creek doesn't hold a large volume of water, so the falls range from an explosive torrent during the spring to a more delicate veil later in the summer, as can be seen in this photo.

Mount Ashland
Mount Ashland is the highest peak in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon. It was named for the city of Ashland, located 8.6 miles north of the mountain. The Siskiyou Mountains are in the northern Klamath Mountains in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. The mountain is part of the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest, which encompasses most of the Siskiyou Mountains. The Oregon–California border is 5 miles south of the mountain.

Yesterday, we explored the North Umpqua Segment of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway. Today, we explored the equally dramatic Upper Rogue Segment, which follows the Rogue River from the pristine springs of its headwaters to its raging rapids. Again today we enjoyed a series of short hikes to impressive waterfalls and rock formations and were impressed by sweeping views of some of the Cascade Range's highest peaks. We started our day in remote Union Creek and ended it in the old gold mining town of Jacksonville, both National Historic Districts.
